Biswanath Majumder, member of Kamalpur gram (village) panchayat was arrested last night after Soma Majumder (37) was hacked to death.
He was taken into custody after the victim's husband Pijush Majumder lodged a complaint with the police.
Police said Soma, an ASHA worker, was murdered at about 8.30 pm allegedly by Biswanath with a sharp weapon when she was returning home at Harishpur under Dhantala Police station. When she was taken to hospital, doctors declared her brought dead.
Pijush and Soma, who have two daughters, used to stay separately.
When produced before the Ranaghat court today, ACJM Bishnu Baran Mondal remanded him to seven days' police custody.
