Leader of Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay today claimed that he has been receiving threat messages with his party chief Mamata Banerjee saying this was being done as he has been vocal on several issues in Parliament, including 'intolerance'.
"I have raised the issue in Parliament. In those messages, I have been threatened that I will be killed," Bandyopadhyay told PTI.
He said he has requested the Union Home Minister to take this issue seriously and make suitable arrangements.
"They are threatening to kill him (Sudip) in Delhi and dispose him of in Kolkata. This is intolerance. I have never seen such violence before," Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters in East Midnapore district.
"What kind of vendetta is this? Sudip da is getting death threats for being vocal in Parliament. This is unacceptable," she said.
"Every party has the right to speak on any issue. Voices cannot be muzzled in democracy. Political leaders, artists and even people from cultural field are being silenced. Intolerance is rising everyday," the Chief Minister said.
Banerjee said her life was full of struggles and she has no fear of death, but targeting the leader of Trinamool Parliamentary Party in Lok Sabha is "unacceptable".
"This is simply unacceptable that an MP who is also the leader of our party in the Lok Sabha is being threatened that he will be killed only because he has been vocal on various issues. In my entire political career, I have never seen such incidents. This is shameful.
"I have never seen such a level of intolerance. We want the truth to come out. I have also asked him (the MP) to raise the issue in Parliament and lodge a FIR in his nearby police station in Delhi," she said.
