Expressing grief over the death of the 91-year-old former legislator, Panneerselvam said as the founder of Sakthi Group of Companies, he had provided employment to a number of persons while being a guide to many entrepreneurs.
He was also running a spiritual magazine called 'Om Sakthi', Panneerselvam said in an official statement.
He said Mahalingam had represented the Tamil Nadu Assembly three times and followed Gandhian principles in his life, besides showing love and compassion to the economically poor.
The Padma Bhusan recipient was honoured by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who had special affection for him, and had felicitated him during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Tamil Nadu Assembly as he was one of the members of the first legislative Assembly.
