Apparently upset over the conviction of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa in an illegal asstes case, a police constable today allegedly attempted self-immolation here, police said.
Velmurugan, attached to a police station in Theni District, tried to douse himself with kerosene after raising some slogans in support of Jayalalithaa near the state police headquarters but was overpowered and taken for inquiry, police said.
Jayalalithaa was convicted and sentenced to four years' prison term in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case by a Bangalore special court on September 27.
