A one-and-a-half-year-old girl fell into a hole dug for soil testing here from which she was pulled after a gruelling 10-hour operation but she could not survive the ordeal.
Khushi slipped and fell into a 30 feet deep hole in Nawabganj area around 8 am while she was running behind her mother.
A joint rescue operation was launched by Army, NDRF and police which continued for around 10 hours after which the toddler was pulled out at 6 pm today and was rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Since residential buildings for government officials are to be constructed behind the Zoo in Nawabganj, several holes ranging from 30 to 90 feet depth were dug for soil testing purpose, District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said.
Soon after she fell into the hole, police was informed by Khushi's relatives. Since the opening of the hole was very small, army was called in, Sharma said.
The army started digging another hole adjacent to the one in which she had fallen and fixed oxygen cylinders so she could breathe.
In the afternoon, an NDRF team from Lucknow was called in and Khushi was located at a depth of 10 feet.
In the end, all of these effors came to naught and the girl died.
Meanwhile, the DM said the incident will be probed into and action taken against those responsible for negligence. All such holes in the area have been closed. Investigation is on, he added.
