The protesting workers took out a march from at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park towards Delhi Secretariat, but were halted by the police at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.
Led by CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta, who is also the general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress, the workers pressed for their long standing 10-point demand that included a minimum wage of Rs 10,000 and pension cover for all.
"We have organised the protest today to alert the government. The UPA government must realise the united might of the working classes, the employees and the toiling masses," Dasgupta said.
Eleven organisations including AITUC, Hind Mazdoor Sangh and Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh participated in the protest.
