The alleged accused entered the house of Dr Atulya Chandra Meher, an Orthopaedic surgeon, and proceeded to the servants quarter behind the residence, where caretaker Prashant Behera, used to reside with his family.
"The man attacked Behera, his wife and son there," police commissioner Rajendra Sharma said.
When Dr Meher, who used to reside in the first floor, reached the place after hearing screams, he too was attacked.
Meher, Prashant and his son died on the spot, and Prashant's wife was seriously injured. The miscreant was also injured in the clash, Sharma said.
The caretaker's wife was shifted to SCB medical college and hospital in Cuutack after her condition deteriorated.
The police was interrogating Dr Meher's wife to find out a possible motive behind the triple murder.
