A truck driver from Punjab was shot dead allegedly by unknown gunmen when he refused to pay extortion money at a land port on Indo-Bangla border at Mahadipur in Malda district, the police said today.
Gurnam Singh (48) died on the way to a local hospital after being shot from close range at about 11.30 PM last night, the police said.
Local anti-social elements extort money from the truck drivers, who carry goods to Bangladesh through this land port, sources said.
Singh had brought a maize-laden truck from Punjab here.
Hundreds of trucks have been stranded after local exporters blocked the road demanding immediate arrest of the culprits, President of Mahadipur Exporters' Association Samir Ghosh said.
