Chandrakant Talwar and Cyron Rodrigues were sentenced to life imprisonment by District and Sessions Judge Vijaya Pol yesterday for raping and murdering Sharmila Mandrekar whose decomposed body was found at Succoro village near here.
However, both of them were acquitted in a second murder case in which they were booked after a half-burnt body of fisherwoman Concessao D'Souza was found near Merces village, 8 kms away from Panaji.
In both the cases, ornaments were found missing.
A gang of four persons, including a minor girl and another woman Grishma Talwar, wife of Chandrakant, was arrested in October 2009 by Goa Police after booking them for killing four women in three days.
Talwar and Rodrigues are still facing trial in two more cases, one involving a minor girl whose body was found at Verna plateau and another of Malati Yadav, a woman whose body was found at Khorjuvem village, 15 kms away from Panaji.
Police in their charge sheet had claimed that the gang used to kidnap women and steal their ornaments before killing them.
In the cases of Mandrekar and another minor girl, Talwar had raped them too, the charge sheet had mentioned.
