Two people allegedly acting as Maoist couriers were arrested and a huge cache of explosives were recovered from them here today, police said.
"Acting on specific information that two suspected Maoists were moving in an SUV with explosives, they were nabbed from the Shankar Nagar area," Raipur Range Inspector General of Police G P Singh told PTI.
Those arrested have been identified as Babulal Sharma (52) and Tarak Kundu (42), who are natives of Bande village of Kanker district in North Bastar region.
Briefing reporters here about the operation, Raipur Superintendent of Police (SP) O P Pal said that the police was mobilised after getting information about the movement of arms and ammunition in a white SUV this morning.
Later, the police party stopped a white SUV near narrow the gauge railway line in Shankar Nagar and arrested them.
During a search of the vehicle, 32 detonators, an oxygen cylinder, a cooking gas cylinder, copper wire, 10 dynamite sticks, nuts, bolts, battery, torches, DVDs and CDs, along with some documents were recovered, the SP said.
"During interrogation, they have revealed that one of them was destined to reach Bastar with the consignment, while the other would stay in Raipur," the SP said.
"The investigation is on to ascertain the source of explosives and their destination," he said.
A letter was recovered from them, addressed to a Maoist commander, stated that half of the consignment is being sent and the rest would be sent soon, he said.
