Two tribal women were killed Wednesday when a speeding Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) hit them near Jamua in Shahdol district, police said.
The victims were standing by a roadside shop and drinking tea when the SUV ran into them, killing the two women on the spot and seriously injuring a man who was with them.
The vehicle dragged the victims for some distance before falling into a ditch, said Sohagpur police station in-charge Kaliram Singh.
The SUV was on its way to Sidhi from Amarkantak, he said, adding that its driver fled from the spot while two persons sitting inside suffered minor injuries.
The deceased women were identified as Rani Baiga (30) and Chhaya Baiga (28).
Monty Baiga (20), the injured, was admitted to the district hospital, Singh said, adding that police were looking for the driver.
