The BJP today claimed that the mining mafia in the state has become stronger under the government protection and demanded a high-level inquiry into an alleged attempt last month to run over an official when she tried to stop "illegal mining".
BJP state unit president Ajay Bhatt said in a press conference here that attempts were made on January 26 to run over Nayab Tahsildar of Chamoli district Manju Rajput when she had gone to stop illegal mining in Birahi river.
"Manju filed a complaint with the Chamoli police station. But instead of taking action Chief Minister's Office is pressuring the officials," he alleged.
Meanwhile, Chamoli Police Regional Officer Jagdish Chadnra said the matter in under investigation.
