A UK Independence Party candidate has been suspended for posting offensive comments on Twitter.
The anti-gay and anti-Muslim tweets posted by Harry Perry were deemed "entirely inconsistent" with UKIP membership, party leader Nigel Farage said today.
Farage admitted his right-wing party had "some idiots" in its ranks and said he did not know Perry.
The suspension ends Perry's plans to run for UKIP in the May 22 European Parliament elections. He had intended to seek election to a seat representing Stockport in northern England.
The party wants Britain to pull out of the European Union. It has seats in the European Parliament but not in Britain's House of Commons.
Perry's comments also disparaged Prime Minister David Cameron.
