The UN Security Council observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Paris attacks that left 129 people dead and shocked the world.
"These attacks led to the loss of so many precious lives and a huge number of casualties," said Justine Greening, the British secretary of state for international development who chaired the meeting yesterday.
The council expresses its "profound sadness and deep outrage at the horrendous terrorist attacks that took place in Paris," said Greening, whose country is this month's council president.
All 15 envoys rose to their feet as the council chamber fell silent to remember the victims who were from 19 countries.
Greening also offered condolences to the families of the victims of the Beirut bombings last week that left 44 dead. Both attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group.
