UN: Over 3,600 cases of sexual violence in Congo

A new UN report says more than 3,600 women, children and men were subjected to sexual violence in Congo over a four-year period by the country's defense and security forces or armed rebels.
The report, released today, said about half the attacks from 2010 through 2013 were by rebel groups and half by government forces.
According to the report, 73 per cent of the 3,635 victims were women, 25 per cent were children and 2 per cent were men. Victims ranged in age from 2 to 80 years old.
While there have been some prosecutions and convictions, the report said most cases "are never investigated or prosecuted, and very few are reported."

UN human rights chief Navi Pillay told a news conference launching the report that more prosecutions are crucial to fight impunity.
