The prisoner was identified as Siba Shankar Sabat (29) of Dengaosta, near Digapahandi.
He was housed in the jail for about two months after being arrested on charges of raping a minor girl.
Sabat has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and his condition is stated to be stable, a jail officer said.
Senior Superintendent of the circle jail B B Patnaik said the jail staff rescued him when he tried to slit his neck.
"We are probing the incident and how he managed to get hold of a sharp object in the jail," Patnaik said.
