Nagaland Governor P B Acharya has said that undertrial prisoners should not be kept in prison without trial for more than six months.
On a visit to the Kohima District Jail along with Chief Judicial Magistrate, Advocate General and government advocates yesterday, he directed them to expedite trials of such inmates.
On learning that some undertrials have been in jail for more than two years, Acharya said that they should not be kept in prison without trial for more than six months.
The Governor reminded that the objective of the law is to reform prisoners by helping them to return to the mainstream of society and not push them into becoming hardened criminals through delay in justice.
Meanwhile, the Governor also directed the state government to immediately take strict steps to give full protection to all the citizens so that business, trade and commerce can be run smoothly.
Expressing concern over the recent killing of a businessman at Signal colony and attack on another at Dimapur by armed miscreants, he said this type of violence and extortion will harm the prosperity and development of the state.
He said if the government wants development and prosperity, law and order and security is pre-essential. The government should take all care and security agencies should be alert, he said.
Acharya also noted that the Centre has taken a strong and welcome step to solve political problems in the region which were pending for more than 18 years.
