The Police today seized 23 pieces of unfinished country-made improvised arms inside a bag from a public bus plying from Garden Reach to Howrah.
The seizure was made during a checking for banned fire crackers, when a police team from Watgunge Police Station stopped the bus en route to Howrah near Dr Sudhir Bose Road and seized the bag containing 23 pieces of unfinished country made 9mm improvised arms, a senior officer said.
"It was a normal routine checkup for banned fire crackers. We ran a check inside this bus which was plying from Garden Reach to Howrah and found this bag. These are just bodies of 9mm improvised arms without springer or other fittings in them. Nobody came forward in the bus to claim the bag," the IPS officer said.
The driver and the bus conductor have been called to verify the owner of the bag, he said.
Meanwhile, police also seized around 1,500 kg of banned fire crackers from a goods-van this evening.
A police team from West Port Police Station seized the banned fire crackers consisting of shells and multiple shots weighing about 1,500 kg in a van covered under tarpaulin.
"The vehicle was intercepted at the junction of Dumayune Avenue and Karl Marx Sarani. So far this is possibly the biggest seizure of banned fire crackers. We have arrested the driver of the vehicle under the Explosive Act," a police officer said.
