"A fact-finding inquiry would be conducted into the alleged remarks of DIG Saharanpur S K Mathur and a report would also be sought from IG in this regard," Additional Director of Police (Law and Order) Jagmohan Yadav told reporters here. He said Mathur has denied having made the remarks yesterday.

Yadav said, "If such a thing has been said, then further action will be taken," noting that it was a serious issue in the wake of honour killing incidents in the area.

"If something like this has been said by a senior officer, then it is wrong as people come to police with expectation," he said.

"The DIG has stated that during an inspection of police station, some 200-250 people came to meet him yesterday and informed him about the incident (about the girl going missing)," Yadav said.

"The DIG said that he sympathetically heard the problem of the people and got a case lodged. He said that the people later left satisfied," he said.

The girl, who was reportedly kidnapped, had married a youth and had filed an application in the court, Yadav said, adding, "She intended to live with the youth she married and her family members were threatening her".
