UP govt failed to take steps to quell riots: BJP

BJP today charged the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh with not taking appropriate steps to quell the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar and is trying to create fear in the minds of minorities by making baseless allegations against the party for votebank politics.
Talking to reporters here, BJP spokesperson Sudanshu Trivedi attributed political causes for the attitude of the Centre and the SP-led government in UP towards the riots and the "failure" to control them.
"The law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh has gone from bad to worse under Samajwadi Party rule. Due to this, communal harmony in the state is being destroyed. Since SP came to power a year and half ago, more than 100 cases of communal riots and clashes, big and small, have taken place in the state," he alleged.

"The Muzaffarnagar riots shows the peak of the crumbling, law and order in UP", he added.
BJP alleged the riots are taking place with such frequency as the administrative machinery has failed completely in the state.
"The administrative machinery has failed due to the pressure of the government on it to fulfil its political motives. Senior police officials have said communal rift in the state has reached dangerous levels," Trivedi said.

He alleged the attitude of Samajwadi Party on the issue of communalism is influenced by votebank politics and motivated towards it.
Noting that Congress-led UPA government at the Centre enjoys outside support of SP, Trivedi charged the two parties are hand in glove and engaged only in a mock-fight on this issue.

"It is sad that instead of honestly accepting its failure to maintain communal harmony in UP, both the government in the state and at the Centre are levelling baseless and false allegations against BJP to create fear in the minds of minority community to create polarisation," Trivedi said.
