John F, resident of Aspen Circle in Fullerton, California, reached the shelter late on Tuesday night after he lost his luggage and passport.
"He said he lost his luggage after getting down from a train from Bengaluru at Kacheguda station. He then went to Begumpet railway station where he saw the night shelter and asked for accommodation. We took him in," said K Jayasri, director of the NGO which runs the shelter.
Telangana's tourism secretary B Venkatesham said he spoke to John today. He had asked John to meet him at his office tomorrow, and the government will see how John can be helped about return to his country, Venkatesham told PTI.
A complaint about loss of luggage has been lodged with police, she said.
"Foreigners are unusual inmates at the shelter. John said he is a gardener and has been travelling in India for the last one year," she added.
John wrote in the shelter's register that "I have been treated very kindly here".
