Pelosi, a leader in the House of Representatives and former House speaker, met foreign minister Prakash Sharan Mahat here and discussed the political situation ahead of the May 14 local level polls, the peace process, and implementation of the new Constitution.
Mahat told her about the provisions in the Constitution, guaranteeing human rights, and those related to women and ethnic inclusiveness in state departments. He expressed confidence that the cooperation the US has provided to Nepalese living in the US will continue.
She said the US would continue to support Nepal no matter which government comes to power in Nepal, the official said.
Appreciating the peace process in Nepal, drafting of the Constitution and managing the political transition, Pelosi hoped for the success of the upcoming local level elections.
Nepal has been witnessing political uncertainties over a host of issues including protest by the Madhesi people for provisions in the Constitution for adequate representation in the legislature and the recent impeachment motion brought by political parties against the first woman chief justice of the country, Sushila Karki.
