A senior official and a clerk of Indira Gandhi Agriculture University (IGAU) here were today arrested by ACB for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000.
"Deputy Registrar of IGAU, M K Gadhewal and clerk Upendramani Upadhyay, were caught while accepting the bribe from Chandrashekhar Khare," an official of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) told PTI.
The complainant is posted as Manager of Regional Agriculture Science Centre (RASC), which functions under IGAU in Janjgir-Champa district.
According to the complaint, Khare was earlier working as Rural Agriculture Extension Officer in Janjgir-Champa. Subsequently, he joined as manager of RASC, after he qualified for the post, the official said.
His resignation from the post of Rural Agriculture Extension Officer was turned down by Deputy Director of Agriculture Department in Janjagir-Champa stating that he has to deposit his salary for three months before quitting the job as per the official terms and conditions.
"Later, Khare had to submit an explanation to the deputy registrar of IGAU for delay in producing the documents related to being relieved from the previous job. But the accused Gadhewal and clerk Upadhyay sought a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from Khare to accept his explanation letter," he said.
They also threatened him to terminate his services in case he failed to give the bribe amount.
After receiving the first instalment of the bribe of Rs 1 lakh, when the accused started pressurising Khare for the rest of the money, he contacted ACB, he said.
The complaint was verified and the accused agreed to accept thebribeof Rs 40,000 at academic building of the university today.
A trap was laid there and as Upadhyay received the bribe amount in the presence of Gadhewal at his cabin, the duo was apprehended, the official said.
A case under various sections of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 has been registered against him, the official added.
