People offered prayers with clay idols of the elephant-headed God, known as 'remover of obstacles', at their homes and giant ones at special pandals set up by resident associations and Hindu outfits.
Lord Ganesha, considered as the first God, was offered "Kozhukattai", a sweet delicacy made of jaggery and coconut in keeping with the occasion.
Grand celebrations marked the event at the famous Sri Karpaga Vinayaka Temple in Pillayarpatti in Sivaganga District in southern Tamil Nadu.
Chathurthi celebrations were held on a grand scale in the Rock Fort Uchi Pillayar temple in Tiruchirappali.
The idols would be immersed in the Bay of Bengal later at identified locations.
Police personnel have been deployed at various locations from where the giant sized idols of the Lord will be taken in a procession for immersing them in the sea.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, AIADMK Deputy General Secretary T T V Dhinaran were among those who have extended their "Vinayaka Chaturthi" greetings to the people.
