"I am happy to share with you that four new medical colleges will be set up in the state. They are already sanctioned," Banerjee said in a Facebook post.
Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had given the assurance for the medical colleges when he had last visited the state, Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya told PTI.
The letter of sanction was received during the day, she said.
Each of the medical colleges will cost Rs 189 crore with the Centre contributing 75 percent and the rest by the state, Bhattacharya said.
There were 300-bed hospitals adjacent to which the medical colleges would come up.
The new medical colleges would be set up at Coochbehar, Rampurhat, Purulia and Raiganj.
The Chief Minister hoped that the medical colleges would provide medical students in the state with greater opportunity to become doctors.
"It will also give a significant boost to our health infrastructure for more people in far-off places," the Chief Minister added.
