West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) has sought a report from the South 24 Parganas district authorities in connection with the rape and murder of a 16-year-old at Kakdwip.
"I have asked for a report from the district magistrate and superintendent of police of South 24 Parganas in this connection," WBCPCR Chairperson Prof Asokendu Sengupta said here today.
Besides, the commission has also spoken to Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson, district child protection officers as well as district social welfare officials in this connection, he said.
A 16-year-old girl's body was found at Kakdwip a night after she went missing on Friday while returning from her tutor's home. Post mortem report yesterday confirmed that she was raped before being strangulated to death.
The family along with the villagers had refused to hand over the girl's body unless the police included rape charge against the accused besides abduction and murder.
The girl's body was cremated yesterday after an in-camera hearing of her father was conducted by the judge of Kakdwip sub-divisional court.
The accused was arrested on Saturday and sent to police custody.
WBCPCR was set up by the state departments of child development and women development and social welfare and works as an independent watchdog to look for any drawbacks in the projects run by the departments and gives advise on how to correct them.
