Punjab Police has completed the formalities for taking the custody of terrorist Gurmeet Singh arrested in Thailand, who is accused of being involved in assassination of former chief minister Beant Singh, after he is extradited to India in a month.
"A competent court in Thailand has ordered his (Gurmeet Singh) extradition yesterday. What we have learnt is that as per procedural part at that end, the concerned person is kept there for a month and then is extradited," Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini told reporters here today.
He said Punjab Police has completed all the formalities in September last year including the amended warrant of arrest in the name of Gurmeet Singh which he has been presently using.
"Punjab Police had located him (Gurmeet Singh) at a certain place in Thailand and paper work was already there... warrants have already been sent there," Saini added.
According to police, Singh was actually Jagtar Singh Tara and had been living in Thailand under a different name.
Singh, who had entered Thailand in October last year, was arrested in the eastern province of Chon Buri on January 6.
Indian government had been in touch with Thai authorities to nab Jagtar "Tara" Singh, who had been hiding in that country for months, probably under different identity.
He is accused of being involved in assassination of former chief minister Beant Singh, who became chief minister in 1992 and began crushing the militancy in the state. He was killed in a blast by Khalistani Sikh terrorists in 1995.
On January 22, 2004 in a daring jail break, Tara and two others, among nine accused in the assassination case, escaped from the high security Burail Jail.
