As part of efforts to enhance medical facilities, the West Bengal government will open 20 new burn units
"This is the state's gradual expansion plan where 20 new burn units will be set up," West Bengal Women and Child Welfare Minister Sashi Panja told PTI.
Besides treating burn victims, acid-attack victims would also be attended at these units, she said, adding that, a new unit would shortly be opened at the Bangur facility.
"At state general hospitals acid-attack victims are treated free of cost. But it would be great if burn units are opened at the district-level... We don't have much units to treat burn patients at the districts," she rued.
"Being a doctor I can understand the trauma and pain of a victim. We have to lend moral support towards them and make the law stricter for the attackers," she said.
Yesterday, a Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha, had expressed concern over acid attacks cases by jilted lovers and others, saying the situation is 'pathetic' and questioned the Centre for its 'laxity' in dealing with the menace.
The bench also comprising justices Kurian Joseph and R F Nariman asked the Centre and issued notices to it and state governments on a plea for framing rehabilitation policy for acid-attack victims.
Incidentally, the apex court had set a deadline of March 31 this year for state governments to frame rules for regulating sale of acid and other corrosive substances to prevent their misuse.
