A 24-year-old married woman allegedly hanged herself at her in-laws' residence in northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar area, police said today.
The deceased has been identified as Juhi Bansal.
The police have recovered no suicide note from the spot.
However, a case under IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and other relevant sections of law was later registered after preliminary investigation, said DCP (Northwest) Vijay Singh.
Juhi's relatives alleged that she was harassed because of dowry, which was mostly demanded in terms of expensive gifts - including gold jewellery and high-end mobile phones, said an official.
Juhi married Ruchit Bansal (29), an entrepreneur, in February last year.
She is survived by her four-month-old daughter, said a police official.
Juhi's relatives also alleged that she was physically and mentally tortured by her husband after she came to know about his extra-marital affair.
However, the police have yet not arrested anyone in connection with the incident.
According to the police, the incident was reported around 2 PM yesterday. The woman was last seen going to the bedroom after taking her lunch, after which her mother-in-law went to a neighbour's house with her granddaughter. When she returned, no one opened the door, after which she raised an alarm.
When neighbours broke open the door, they saw that Juhi had allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling fan with a piece of cloth.
"Investigation is underway and the case shall be probed from all possible angles," the official added.
