A woman has moved the Madras High Court bench here, seeking a direction to central and state governments to rescue her 30-year-old daughter who is allegedly being tortured by her employer in Oman.
Justices K K Sasidharan and B Gokuldas who heard the habeas corpus petition by one Kalavathi, directed officials, including those of the External Affairs Ministry/Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and the Home Secretary of Tamil Nadu to file a status report on June 28.
Kalavathi submitted that her daughter Meghala was forced to seek a job in Oman on April 26 this year to support the family after her (Megahala's) husband lost one of his legs in an accident.
She was assured of a salary of Rs 20,000 a month by her agent. However, she was not given the same.
A few days ago, Meghala called her and said she was being tortured mentally and physically by her employer who forced her to work for 22 hours a day.
The petitioner submitted that her daughter was being illegally detained in Oman and feared that her life was in danger.
She stated that she had made several representations to the External Affairs Ministry, the state Home Secretary and district officials but of no avail.
Hence, she decided to move the court.
