Nilesh Rane, the elder son of Maharashtra industries minister Narayan Rane, today said he would not stand for coming Assembly election against NCP's Bhaskar Jadhav, but "will not rest" until the latter was defeated.
Nilesh had earlier said he would contest as a rebel candidate against Jadhav, the minister for water resources, from Guhagar in Konkan region.
The announcement had upset NCP, Congress's ally.
"I have never been against a party. My fight has been against a certain individual. Congress has given a big responsibility to Narayan Rane (as campaign committee chief in Maharashtra) and I have to help him in fulfilling it. I do not want him (Rane senior) to face problems because of me, so I have decided against contesting as independent candidate from Guhagar," Nilesh said, speaking to reporters here.
He added that he had not asked the party leadership to give him any other seat.
"If I am not contesting, it does not mean I won't campaign against Jadhav. He had campaigned against me during the Lok Sabha elections and I will campaign against him now. I will not rest until he is defeated," Nilesh said.
"Certain elements in NCP are trying to create trouble for the Rane family. I will reveal their names soon," he said.
