Work was suspended at the Auckland Jute Mill at Jagaddal in North 24 Parganas district today in the wake of ongoing dispute between employees and management over payment of salary on offdays.
According to police sources, some of the workers staged a protest and allegedly assaulted the security-in-charge after the notice for suspension was put up.
He, however, was soon rescued.
There are about 3,500 workers employed at the jute mill, as per workers' union sources.
Despite efforts, company officials were not available for comments.
