Stressing on the need for physical exercise, yoga exponent Dr Nagendra today claimed that the practice could be the best therapy for non-communicable diseases (NCDS) like diabetes, asthma, obesity, stress, and hyper-tension.
"One hour of daily yoga if done properly will cure 100 per cent non-communicable diseases and can drastically cut the intake of modern medicines", Dr Nagendra, President Swami Vivekanand Yoga Research Foundation, told reporters at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and Medical College (MGHMC) here.
Dr Nagendra, who has devoted his life to Yoga after completion of higher research in mechanical engineering at NASA in US, said his foundation would organise 1,000 yoga camps across the country from 21-27 June to mark the World Yoga Day on June 21 next month.
On Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje hinting at a separate university committed to yoga only, he said, "Raje's vision is very clear, and her mission is very good".
When reminded of Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev's mission, Dr Nagendra said, "His heart is very big. He is the one who popularised Yoga nationally and internationally".
On being asked about the adoption of 'Surya Namaskar' in Rajasthan's schools by the BJP government, he said, "Yoga is good".
Dr M L Swarankar, founder Director of MGHMC, said the University would prefer to start diploma in Yoga along with modern medicine.
"If you are not ill, it does not mean you are healthy. Health means you need to have positive health, perfect health and prevent illness", Dr Nagendra later said during a lecture on 'Scientific Basis of Yoga and its place in prevention and management of modern NCDS'.
Psycho-somatic ailment like high blood pressure, and psychiatric problems lie anxiety, neurons, psyhcosis have no simple solution in modern medicine despite having the best medical care in big hospitals, he said.
