West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee today said Governor K N Tripathi's decision to directly send letters for International Yoga Day celebrations to universities, by bypassing the state government, was "unprecedented and unacceptable".
"The norm is that state government sends letters to the state universities. But this time, we are seeing that the Governor, in his capacity as chancellor of state universities, has directly written letters to the VCs, urging them to celebrate International Yoga Day. This is unprecedented and unacceptable," Chatterjee told reporters here.
The International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21.
"The Governor himself should think whether this amounts to violation of norms. We are not taking this decision in good humour," he said.
The West Bengal government, the minister said, will observe the day this year too, like it did in 2017.
"After we came to power, we have given special stress to yoga and physical fitness education in all schools," he said.
According to media reports, Tripathi had written to vice-chancellors of all state universities to observe International Yoga Day.
