A young couple committed suicide by jumping into the Yeleru canal near Tummapala village under Anakapalle rural police station limits, after being branded as thieves by their neighbours.
The couple, took the step on Monday, though it came to light only today, when their bodies surfaced, the police said.
K Venkata Naga Umamaheswara Rao (34) and his wife K Jhansi (25) had been staying in a rented house at Tummapala for past one year, after their marriage four years ago. Rao worked at a printing press and Jhansi was a house wife.
A few days ago, the Anakapalle rural police collected the couple's fingerprints after 40 gm of gold ornaments went missing from their house owner's home.
Depressed after they were accused of stealing the gold ornaments by the house owner and neighbors, the went to the outskirts of the village and jumped into Yeleru canal.
Locals found their bodies after they surfaced today morning and alerted the police, after which the Anakapalle rural police retrieved them.
A suicide note recovered from Rao's pocket stated that they had taken the extreme step since they were branded as thieves, adding that he also picked up a fight with his wife.
Their bodies have been sent to the government hospital for post mortem after a case was registered, the police said.
