Under the Prime Minister's Employment Guarantee Programme (PMEGP), a major credit-linked subsidy scheme and a flagship employment generation programme for the unemployed implemented through banks, more than 222,000 first-generation entrepreneurs have been assisted since 2008-09, creating employment for over two million persons.
The ministry has targeted the creation of over 100 new enterprises per district every year under the PMEGP in all the 650 districts of the country. During the 12th Plan period, the ministry intends to create around 500,000 such enterprises under the PMEGP, creating employment opportunities for around four million persons.
The MSME sector employs an estimated 80 million people spread over 36 million enterprises.
