The year 1998-99 has logged an 11 per cent increase in the number of trademarks registered by Indian applicants in the country. For applications originating from foreigners, the increase stands at 16 per cent
According to the annual report on trademarks for the year 1998-99, a total of 51,796 applications were filed during the year.
While the goods from pharmaceuticals, veterinary and sanitary substance received the largest number (9,529) of applications, the group of goods comprising of firearms, ammunition and projectiles regsitered the least number of applications (105).

As per the report 726 notices of opposition to registeration of trademarks were filed during the year.
