The centrepiece of the convoy of trucks and cars was a black vehicle with a dome and an antenna, described as a 'jammer'. Another black vehicle carrying a power generator too attracted the attention of gawkers as the convoy passed by.

lNO LOCAL hand was enlisted in Hyderabad to unload the equipment. It was clear that the Americans who accompanied the cargo are experts at their business. The way they went about their business of setting the stage for the President's visit was coolly professional. The advance party is also expected to sterilize Hyderabad's hitech city and two US-funded hospitals which Mr Clinton is expected to visit.

l IN AGRA, similarly hectic preparations are underway Mr Clinton's visit on March 22. The roads linking Kheria airport and Taj Khema hotel, where Mr Clinton is to stay have been relaid. Even the electric poles have been re-painted. The President is to visit the Taj Mahal and follow that up by addressing a programme on environment at his hotel. No one who is not part of the entourage will be allowed to stay at the hotel and even nearby hotels or guest houses during his stay in Agra. Several teams of security and technical specialists have toured Agra and reviewed the arrangements at the places the President is to visit and routes he is to pass through.

l THE American teams have not been in touch with the Agra city administration. This had caused consternation for officials who were in a quandary over who would be allowed to take part in the programmes organised for mr clinton. All other administrative activity had ground to a halt.

AGRA mayor Bebi Rani Maurya said Mr Clinton would be welcomed in traditional Indian style. He would also be presented a key to the city as a goodwill gesture.

l AIR FORCE One, the Boeing aircraft carrying Mr Clinton and his huge contingent-has generated a lot of enthusiasm among the aircraft lovers. Also referred to as the Flying White House, Air Force One, is equipped with self-contained baggage loading equipment, latest emergency medical facilities and inflight refuelling facilities. Apart from the presidential office, the executive suite and dining room for the President, it has accommodation for guests, senior state staff, secret service, security personnel and mediapersons. Two galleys can provide up to 100 meals at one sitting.
