Old Connection

this is with reference to the news item CBI uncovers CRB link to granite firm (BS, June 7).

It appears that neither CBI nor your correspondent is aware of the fact that the name of the granite company referred to is Jaihind Granite Industries Ltd. which was changed to CRB Corporation Ltd. on September 30, 1994. If this basic checking had been done, the uncovering would not have been unduly credited to CBI nor reported so sensationally.

The credibility is further damaged by a quoted remark of a CBI official, We are at a loss to understand how Sebi missed this investment while drawing up a list of companies of the group despite the fact that Jaihind is a listed company. This is a totally unfair allegation against Sebi which had in fact included the name of CRB Corporation Ltd. in its list.

Unfortunately, such is the dismal state of information resources in our country that it often leads to goof-ups and also hampers any investigation process. Worse, at times it becomes a blessing for the culprits.
