PRADHAN MANTRI JAN DHAN YOJANA
"I have come here with a pledge to launch a scheme on this festival of freedom. It will be called the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. I wish to connect the poorest citizens of the country with the facility of bank accounts through this scheme. There are millions of families that have mobile phones but no bank accounts."
Status: The scheme was launched on Aug 28, 2014, to open accounts for 75 mn unbanked households. Till July 29, 2015, a total of 172.9 mn accounts had been opened, and they had a balance of Rs 2.1 lakh-crore.
