Prices declined on the first day of the current settlement on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday on fresh selling pressure. The NSE-50 index opened steady at 1,086.65, but declined to close at 1,083.00, a fall of 3.05 over the last close of 1086.05.

The dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index started higher at 953.10 and improved further to 967.10. Later, it declined to close at 950.30, revealing a loss of 2.50 from the previous close of 952.80. The Midcap index, after a better start at 1,235.90, rose to 1,257.55 and settled at 1,235.75, a gain of 2.90 from the last close of 1,232.85.

The total turnover was Rs 1,710.72 crore from 637.23 lakh shares in 1,95,861 trades. Debentures turnover was Rs 172.32 lakh. The most actively traded securities were ITC (Rs 510.40 cr), Reliance (Rs 247.89 cr), Castrol (Rs 155.98 cr), SBI-N (Rs 152.72 cr) and Tata Tea (Rs 121.59 cr). Sixty-three securities hit their price bands.

Other actively traded securities were Hind Lever (Rs 85.25 cr), ACC (Rs 71.61 cr), Lml (Rs 38.29 cr), Tisco (Rs 35.05 cr), Bajaj Auto (Rs 34.03 cr), Telco (Rs 21.80 cr), Sterlite (Rs 17.35 cr), MTNL (Rs 16.71 cr), L&T (Rs 15.91 cr), Corpbank (Rs 11.42 cr), Aptech (Rs 10.08 cr), BSES (Rs 9.76 cr), ICICI (Rs 9.64 cr), Reck&Colman (Rs 7.79 cr), BHEL (Rs 6.52 cr), Pentsoftware (Rs 6.26 cr), Gujambcem (Rs 5.49 cr), IPCL (Rs 5.37 cr), SBIN Dep LS-ML (Rs 5.24 cr) and BPL (Rs 4.35 cr).

Todays top five Nefty gainers were ABB Rs 454.35 (Rs 431), Gujambcem Rs 273.85 (Rs 264.80), Hind Lever Rs 1,592.15 (Rs 1,550.90), Indrayon Rs 151.35 (Rs 149.50) and EI Hotel Rs 378.50 (Rs 373.90).

The main losers were ACC Rs 1,385.55 (Rs 1,440.55), Reliance Rs 172 (Rs 176.45), Indogulf Rs 35.50 (Rs 36.35), Castrol Rs 700.35 (Rs 714.85) and Tata Tea Rs 417.70 (Rs 426.00).

Meanwhile, equity prices witnessed modest rise in listless trading on the Over the Counter Exchange of India (OTCEI).

The OTCEI composite index opened at 115.40 and closed at 115.46, showing a minor increase of 0.06 points against the previous days close of 115.40. The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 9.09 lakh, involving 40,400 shares and debentures.
