Hockey World Cup, Quarterfinals Summary

 

It was yet another evening of exciting hockey at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. Germany, after being 0-2 down for the first 56 minutes of the game, came back brilliantly to make it 2-2 at the end of the match and then beat England 4-3 in Shoot-Out to march to the semi-final. 

 

In the second game of the evening, the Netherlands turned out to be too good for the Koreans who had upset Argentina in their last game. The Dutch won 5-1 to make it to yet another semi-final of a World Cup. The four semi-finalists of the tournament as predicted beforehand by many pundits are Australia, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Dutch have won the game fair and square 5-1 as the Koreans were no match for them. Koen Bijen scored twice for the Dutch while Van Heijningen Steijn, Beins Teun and Blok Justen scored one goal each to get to five goals. For Korea, Seo Inwoo scored the only goal.

The Koreans had a chance to get back into the game. What was their strength against Argentina, has turned out to be their weakness against the Dutch. While they converted three out of five PCs against Argentina, over here, they have been unable to convert any out of the seven that they have been able to create so far.

Justen Blok scored for the dutch with a great three-shot move in which the first shot took the ball to the player at the baseline who in turn passed it to Blok stationed right in front of the goal and like training routine, it went past the Korean goal-keeper and the Dutch are now sailing smooth.

However, when it comes to the numbers that matter the most, goals- the Dutch have one, but the Koreans don’t.

Germany, after being 0-2 down and having missed a penalty stroke, scored two goals in last three minutes to push into the shoot-out where they won 4-3 as Goodfield and Liam Ansell missed their shots.

Olly Paine, who saved a stroke, has come on to face Niklas Wellen who does well to doge the English goalkeeper and score. The Germans are now level at 1-1. 

 

Zack Wallace beats the German goalkeeper and makes it 2-1 to England

Phil Ropher has kept England in the game thanks to a brilliant finish from an outside angle and with a reverse stick 

 

Christopher Ruhr, who missed the penalty stroke, comes to take the shot and his first shot is saved and he scores on the rebound

 

Liam Ansell comes into take the shot to keep England in the hunt and he has missed. Germany have won a game and a half here. This is one of the best comebacks you will ever see in sporting history.
