"We have been operating in India for the last three years and with the new push in the branding and distribution, we are targetting to become the third largest smartphone brand in the country by the end of 2016-17," Gionee regional director Alok Shrivastava told the media here today.

He said Uttar Pradesh was the biggest smartphones market in India in terms of volume and thus important for the company.

He was in town to launch Gionee Pioneer P5L series, which comes with 4G connectivity and is VoLTE technology compatible. It carries a price tag of Rs 8,499. VoLTE compatibility authorises the phone to experience a clearer and faster phone call speed.

Pioneer P5L is enabled with 1.3 GHz Quad Core Central Processing Unit (CPU) and packaged with the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop. So far, Gionee has launched 8 models under the Pioneer series.

Established in 2002, Gionee sells nearly 23 million handsets annually worldwide and ranks 10th in the global smartphone market share.
