Samsung, a South Korean electronics giant, is reportedly working on an affordable smartphone with Android Oreo Go edition operating system. The phone’s purported model number and specifications have been leaked, and the phone is reportedly being tested in several markets, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, according to technology portal Sammobile.

According to leak, the budget smartphone would go with J260F model number, which refers to Samsung’s budget J2-series. The phone is expected to sport a 5-inch super AMOLED screen, possibly in an 18:9 aspect ratio format. It is expected to be powered by Exynos 7570 system-on-chip (SoC), an entry-level processor designed by Samsung, paired with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The phone is expected to sport an 8-megapixel primary camera on the back and a 5MP selfie camera on the front. Powering the phone would be a 2,600 mAh battery.

The Android Oreo Go edition operating system is the key proposition of the smartphone. Unveiled last year by search engine giant Google, the operating system is a trimmed down version of Android Oreo, which is currently the latest operating system that powers Android devices. The Oreo Go edition operating system is optimised to run efficiently on devices with limited hardware resources. It is designed to work efficiently on devices with 1GB of RAM or less. The Android Oreo (Go edition) comes with a dedicated suite of apps from Google. These apps include Gmail Go, Maps Go, Files Go, Chrome, YouTube Go, Assistant Go, Play Store and GBoard. The apps provide similar utilities, but take less space in the phone and use less mobile data to operate.
