Mobile phones with a computing speed that is equivalent to that of computers four years ago will hit the market by this year-end, said a senior official of Qualcomm, a global leader in mobile technologies.
"We expect phones with clock speed of 2.5 Ghz per core to be in market by end of 2012. The processor will be based on Krait mirco-architecture and will be part of Snapdragon processor family that we offer," Qualcomm India President and South Asia Senior Vice President Avneesh Agrawal told PTI.
Intel had launched in 2008 dual core processor (chipsets) that were delivering processing speed of 2.5 Ghz for personal computers
At present, Lava International's Xolo X900 smartphone is known to have the fastest processor for mobile phones, again from Intel, which promises a speed of 1.6 Ghz per core.
Agrawal said that new Krait series processor will be consume 65% less power compared to other processors available for mobile devices at present.
Qualcomm has plans to launch its new processor in single, dual and quad-core versions with integrated multi-mode technology to support 4G technology.
The Krait design based chipsets are expected to support access for wirless connectivity technology including WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and Near Field communication (NFC)among others.
