Often, during salary negotiations, you are in a dilemma: You want to quote a number that is acceptable to you without appearing greedy. To save you from such a stressful situation, Linkedin has launched a portal called Linkedin Salary, which gives you the average base salary for your profession.

All that you need to do to know what you can expect is enter your job title and location, and the search result gives you the median base salary and median total compensation for your profession. You can also filter the search result on the basis of the industry and your years of experience. Not only that, you can get more information on how salary differs by location and education. It also tells you which companies are hiring.

To get further insights on the job, Linkedin urges users to enter their salary details, which it says would not be shared with the recruiter and would be used  to compute salary insights in relation to factors like title, company, region, and skills. The professional networking site says it encrypts the salary data  with the RSA-2048 technology to ensure that your information is stored securely and remains protected.

For now, the data have been collected from the US, UK, and Canada and users in other countries will be able to access it. The latest move will put Linkedin in direct competition with Glassdoor, a website that offers a similar service. Linkedin has more than 400 million users across the globe. Microsoft bought the professional networking site in June for $26.2 billion.
