Sonia Gandhi is an influential Indian politician and a key figure in the Indian National Congress (INC). Originally from Italy, she married Rajiv Gandhi, son of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and became part of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty. After her husband's assassination in 1991, Sonia Gandhi stayed away from politics but eventually entered the fray, becoming the President of the INC in 1998, a position she held for over two decades. Under her leadership, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) won two consecutive national elections in 2004 and 2009.
