The government is planning to open Jan Aushadhi stores at railway stations railway stations and other railway establishments for providing generic drugs to consumers. To discuss in detail the plan to open such stores across the country, Ananth Kumar, Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers, met Railway Minster Suresh Prabhu last week.

Assuring firm support to the PMBJP (Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana) scheme from Ministry of Railways’ side, Prabhu said, “An in-principle decision to open Janaushadhi Kendras at Railway Stations and other Railway establishments has been taken. Railways being the largest employer in India, the amalgamation of efforts between the two Ministries for the percolation of generic drugs would increase their accessibility to the common man manifold.” 

Ananth Kumar added, “We will utilise the vast railway infrastructure to increase accessibility of affordable, quality generic drugs for the common man.” 

Further, Kumar said that the Government is pursuing in full force the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to make affordable and quality medicines accessible to all citizens of the country. Currently over 1600 Jan Aushadhi stores have been opened in over 450 districts across India under the PMBJP. Senior officers of the two Ministries are working on the modalities and the strategy for roll out of the plan.
