Bharat Ratna to Charan Singh honour to India's 900 mn farmers: UP minister

Uttar Pradesh minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary on Sunday said the Bharat Ratna conferred on former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh is an "honour to the 90 crore farmers of India". Singh, who was posthumously conferred with India's highest civilian award on February 9, championed for farmers' causes. Speaking to PTI on Sunday, Chaudhary said, "After Independence, Chaudhary Charan Singh was the only polition to be regarded as the messiah of the farmers. He was the first to say that the path which leads to the development of the country passes through its farms." "He had taken a number of steps in the interest and welfare of the farmers. UP CM directs official to compensate farmers for recent crop damage

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Saturday directed officials to provide relief grants to the affected farmers by immediately surveying crop damage caused by hailstorms and rain in the last 24 hours, an official release said. He has also expressed condolence over the loss of lives in the state due to various calamities and instructed the district magistrates to immediately distribute the permissible relief amount from the state disaster response fund (SDRF) to the families of the deceased. The chief minister Saturday held a high-level meeting to review the situation arising out of recent untimely rains and hailstorms in various areas of the state and issued necessary guidelines to the officials. BSP Chief Mayawati urges UP govt to help farmers affected by scarce monsoon

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Thursday urged the Uttar Pradesh government to help farmers affected by a weak monsoon this season. "Farmers of Uttar Pradesh are already in distress as they are not getting sugarcane arrears and remunerative prices for their produce.
