Delhi govt set to clear plan to replace 40,000 streetlights with LEDs

The Delhi government is likely to give financial approval to replace 40,000 old streetlights on roads under the public works department, official sources said on Wednesday. In September last year, the department announced a plan to replace conventional sodium (HPSV) streetlights with modern smart LED fittings. The expenditure for the project is likely to be placed in the next expenditure and finance meeting, they said. "A proposal is being made by the department, which will be put up in the next E and FC meeting for financial nod. After that, further work on inviting tenders and selecting an agency will be done," a source said. Currently, around 96,000 streetlights are managed by the public works department (PWD), of which 45,000 still run on conventional HPSV fittings. "These will now be systematically replaced with energy-efficient smart LED lights, ensuring better illumination, reduced electricity consumption and longer lifespan," the source said. Award for NDMC for efficiency in street lighting: Mayor Jai Prakash

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has bagged an award for bringing energy saving in street lighting system by converting a huge number of units to automation-based LED lights,its mayor Jai Prakash said on Monday. He said that the NDMC had participated in the HUDCO Awards for the first time and received it along with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. "The NDMC got the award under the theme of 'Environment management, Energy Conservation & Green Building' for one of India's biggest replacement, approximately 2 lakh conventional street lights with automation-based LED lights system," he said. This saved nearly 65 per cent electricity consumption. It also resulted in reduction of 20,000 tonnes equivalent of carbon dioxide emission, saving about 90 million units of electricity annually, thus helping in improving the environment tremendously, Prakash said.
